After the recent excellent coverage of river surfing SUP at the Teva Mountain Games and the Rocky Mountain Surf Festival, it was great to see the article on flatwater Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing in today’s Denver Post. The interest in flatwater SUP is exploding due to the range of ages and abilities that can participate. This Spring I have introduced 13 year old kids, as well as a 71 year old couple, to the joys of SUP. The article is correct in stating that almost anyone can do this. It takes me about 10 minutes to get a person from the shoreline to paddling away on a SUP board. The biggest obstacle is the fear of falling into cold water. This is understandable given Colorado’s snow fed waters, even in the “mountains’ shadows.” But the typical recreational SUP board is so stable that out of 25+ people that I have taught to SUP so far this year only 1 person has gotten more than their feet wet. The locations mentioned in the article are all great places to learn, Soda Lakes at Bear Creek Reservoir is especially nice for groups and families because of the other facilities available. I offer an Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing for $25 per person. Individual, fitness, group coaching sessions and rentals are also available. This is so much fun that you have just got to try it. Web: surfsupcolorado.com Email: john@surfsupcolorado.com 720-635-SURF (7873)

Father's Day

Father's Day is almost here!!!

And you're still clueless about what to give the Dad in your life?
Why not give him something that he would never expect, and he will never forget,
an Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing?

  • Is Dad a landlocked surfer dude from out on the coast who talks about the good old days of riding waves, beach parties & bikinis, with a sun kissed, far away look in his eyes?
  • Does Dad act a little bit lost now that the snow has melted away from his favorite slopes and he has reluctantly put his boards away for the summer and now wonders, what does he do until November?
  • Did your folks recently come back from an island vacation and Dad keeps looking for ways to keep the Aloha spirit alive back home in Colorado, short of wearing a man-skirt and learning to play the ukelele?
Give your Dad the opportunity to learn to surf, Colorado Style, with a certificate good for two people for an Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing for a special price of only $50.
Call or email Surf'SUP Colorado to reserve a certificate for your Dad.

71 year old couple learn to SUP

Aloha!
What a great afternoon we had at Soda Lakes. The weather has finally gotten warmer. And I had a great time teaching some dear friends of ours how to SUP this afternoon. Steve and Holly are 71 years young and they just loved the experience of paddling across the water. Holly was hesitant at first because of a recent knee replacement, but after watching Steve get up and paddle away from the shore, she just had to try it.

There were several other SUPers on the water as well, almost a SUP traffic jam. It’s great to see others out on the water enjoying the sport of Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing.

6:00 a.m. SUP session at Soda Lakes

Aloha!
I’ve been teaching my son, Daniel, how to SUP before he goes to work in the morning. Daniel’s family is headed for Kauai where he hopes to SUP in Hanalei Bay. Bear Creek Lake Park opens at 6:00 a.m. It has been cold, but there is something special about getting out on the water that early in the morning.

4-pack lesson give away, Shaffer Elementary, Silent Auction

Aloha!
surf’SUP colorado contributed a 4-pack lesson package to the Shaffer Elementary School’s Silent Auction tonight. We had a lot of people come up and ask us about Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing. Having an 11’4” BIC Sport SUP board and paddle standing up in the corner of the room will do that. It definitely was the biggest item in the gym for the silent auction Many people have heard about Stand Up Paddleboard Surfing or seen it on TV or YouTube and are really interested in trying to surf in Colorado with surf’SUP colorado. Congratulation to the winner of the auction and a great, big mahalo! for the amount that was raised to support education at Shaffer Elementary School. And I’m looking forward to teaching one lucky person how to SUP this summer.
